The OKBT (Ontario Kayak Bass Trail) Lake Nipissing event during zone 11 bass opening weekend was an exhilarating experience. With 135 dedicated kayak anglers converging on the picturesque Lake Nipissing, the excitement in the air was palpable. The entry fee of $90 was a worthwhile investment for a chance to compete and possibly take home a share of the prize money. The top 10% of anglers were in the money with first place with a hefty $3500 winnings.
As the competition kicked off, I was hopeful and ready. The day started strong with perfect weather conditions for bass fishing. My strategy centered around using a Rapala Crush City Ned BLT in Green Pumpkin Magic color, paired with a VMC 1/8 Ned Rig Jig. This setup had proven successful in past fishing sessions, and I was confident it would deliver.
Depending on the bite and how active the fish are, I’ll even deadstick it and just let the current do its thing.
The day wasn’t without its challenges. Despite my preparation and strategy, I managed to catch only 2 out of the 5 fish needed for a full limit. Both were smallmouth bass, collectively measuring 29.5 inches in length. Unfortunately, I received a 1/2″ deduction on my 17″ smallie because I submitted a photo of the fish with the mouth open. As a result my official length was 29″. Live and learn. Although I didn’t secure a spot in the payout bracket, I was proud of my catches given the competitive nature of the event and the skilled anglers present.
Finishing in 96th out of the 135 anglers competing was a humbling yet educational experience. It underscored the importance of adaptability and persistence in tournament fishing. The Rapala Crush City Ned BLT and VMC 1/8 Ned Rig Jig proved to be effective, and I’ll definitely be refining my techniques with them for future tournaments.
Participating in the OKBT Lake Nipissing event was not just about competition but also about camaraderie and learning. Sharing the water with such passionate and skilled anglers was inspiring, and I look forward to applying the lessons learned in upcoming events. Whether you finish at the top or in the middle, every tournament is an opportunity to grow as an angler.
